John Pigott, Jr (RS), c. 1755, SC>GA

John Pigott, Jr. , my paternal 5th great-grandfather, was born c. 1755 in Cheraws District, South Carolina, the son of John Pigott I and Elizabeth (maiden name unknown).   Family tradition states that John, Jr grew up in the Cheraws District of South Carolina.  He served with his father, John Pigott, Sr and his brother, Nathaniel Pigott in the company of Elias Dubose, Volunteer Militia, under the command of Francis Marion during the Revolutionary War.  "Marion's Men" held the PeeDee section of South Carolina against the British.  (Original data: Moss, Boby Gilmer. Baltimore, MD, USA: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1994.)  He was listed on the Jury List for 1778-79, Cheraws District, South Carolina.  He owned 150 acres on Lynches Creek in South Carolina, which he sold to his brother Charles in 1797.

John Pigott, Jr. married c. 1778  Martha Warren, the daughter of John Warren, Jr and Martha Dubose.  She was born c. 1760 in South Carolina.  On the 1790 census, John's household consisted of 2 males under age 16, 3 males age 16 and over, and 5 females.

John Jr. moved his family to Liberty County, Georgia in the early 1790's where they settled near the Canouchee River.  He was a Captain in Elihu Hebbard's Company of Camden County, Georgia Militia from 24 May until 01 August 1793 to repel Indian Raids.  He was an Indian Scout, employed by Lt. Colonel Daniel Stewart of Liberty County, Georgia.  Additionally, John Jr was a Lt. in the 3rd Company, Georgia Militia 1799-1800, Liberty County.  His son, John III, took his place for this position on 17 March 1800.

Between the years 1791-1802, John Jr. acquired 750 acres.  He and his wife, Martha, remained in the Liberty County, Georgia area until his death (it is estimated that he died between 1808-1810).  His widow, Martha, moved with most of her adult children to Pike County, Mississippi c. 1817-18.  She died 01 October 1831 in Marion County, Mississippi.

Enoch Hines, c. 1803-1881, NC>MS>LA

Enoch Hines, my paternal 4th great-grandfather, was born c. 1803 in North Carolina (possibly Sampson County).  He was the son of Felix Hines and Mary "Molly" Carr.  He was in Marion County, Mississippi in the 1820's as he married Susannah Guy on 28 January 1824 in said county.  Susannah was born c. 1807 in  Duplin County, North Carolina, the daughter of Jesse Guy and Mary "Polly" Conerly.  

Enoch and Susannah are shown together on the 1850 Federal Census, Pike County, Mississippi.  Their household then consisted of- Enoch Hines (age 47, Blacksmith, born in North Carolina), Susan H. (age 45, born in North Carolina), Enoch H. (Henry), age 12, Felix, age 10, Christiann (Christina), age 5 and Frances, age 3.  Also in their household were "Students"- George W. Brumfield, age 20 and Andrew J. Brumfield, age 20; and a "Ditcher", William Burns, age 60.   (Not shown on this census are three daughters of Enoch and Susannah- Elizabeth, who married Charles Perry Thomas in 1842, Rebecca, who married George M. Fitzgerald in 1846 and Mary "Polly" Hines, who had married James B. McCain before 1847)

By 1860, Enoch and Susannah had moved to Washington Parish, Louisiana.  Their son, Felix, and daughter, Frances, remained in their household.  Their son, Enoch Henry, had married Susan Ann Kornegay and the couple also resided in the same household.  I'm uncertain as to the whereabouts of their daughter, Christina at that time.

I have been unable to locate the Enoch Hines family on the 1870 Federal Census.  Enoch's wife, Susannah, died c. 1873 in Angie, Washington Parish, Louisiana.  She was buried in the Hines Cemetery there.  In 1880, Enoch resided in the household with his daughter, Mary "Polly", who was then married to Seaborn W. Stogner.

Enoch Hines died 19 July 1881 at the age of 78.  He was buried in the Hines Cemetery, Angie, Washington Parish, Louisiana.

Mary "Polly" Hines, 1828-1896, LA>MS

Mary "Polly" Hines, my paternal third great-grandmother, was born 10 March 1828 in Marion County, Mississippi, the daughter of Enoch Hines and Susannah Guy.  She married first James B. McCain, the son of Edward McCain and Nancy Bennett.  The couple was enumerated together on the 1860 Federal Census of Washington Parish, Louisiana.  At that time, they had four children- Rebecca J. (Jane), age 12, William J. (James), age 8, Edward, age 5 and Simeon? B. (Samuel Bennett), age 2.

Another son was born from the union of Mary and her first husband- Nicholas James McCain, born in September 1863.  In the same year, Mary's husband died (cause of death unknown).

Mary married second Seaborn W. Stogner, on 15 September 1869.  He was the son of Ezell Stogner and Martha Pigott.  He was born February 1819 in Marion County, Mississippi.  On the 1870 Federal Census, Mary is listed in the household of her husband, Seaborn W. "Stayner", along with her sons William, Edward, Samuel and Nicholas McCain.  Her daughter, Rebecca Jane, had married Jackson Singley and was no longer in her household.  Also living in the Stogner household that year was Martha Pigott, mother of Seaborn.

In 1880, Mary and Seaborn resided in the Water Holes district of Marion County, Mississippi.  They had a child together- daughter Martha Ann, born c. 1871. Simeon B. (Samuel) McCain, still resided with Mary.  Her other children from her first marriage to had all married and moved out.  Her son, Edward McCain, had married Margaret Ann Turnage and the couple resided next door.  Also residing in Mary's household that year was her widowed father, Enoch Hines.

Mary "Polly" Hines died on 23 March 1896 in Marion County, Mississippi.  Her husband, Seaborn, died sometime after 1900.  It is unknown where she or her husbands are buried.  The daughter of Mary and Seaborn, Martha Ann, later married James Thomas.  The children of Mary and James are listed under his profile.

Edward McCain, c. 1787-, Ireland>LA

My paternal 4th great-grandfather, Edward McCain, was born c. 1787 in Dublin, Ireland.  He was in New Orleans, Louisiana by 1810, because it is said that is where he married his wife, Nancy Bennett.  

According to one family historian, Edward McCain was said to have been a professor at a university in Dublin.  After teaching for a short time in New Orleans, he accepted the position of Superintendent of Schools, Greensburg, Washington Parish, Louisiana, where he remained until his retirement.  The 1850 census listed his occupation as teacher and engineer.  (I have not confirmed any of this information).

James B. McCain, c. 1824-1863, Washington Parish LA

James B. McCain was born c. 1824 in Washington Parish, Louisiana and died c. 1863.  He was the son of Edward McCain and Nancy Bennett.  He married Mary "Polly" Hines, the daughter of Enoch Hines and Susannah Guy.  She was born 10 March 1828 and died 23 March 1896 in Marion County, Mississippi.  After James' death, Mary later married Seaborn W. Stogner, the son of Ezell Stogner and Martha Pigott.  At present, I have very little knowledge of James B. McCain.  I have located him on one federal census record-  1860 Washington Parish, Louisiana which shows James McCain along with wife Mary and children Rebecca J., William J., Edward, and Semion? B (Samuel).

Edward "Ned" McCain, 1855-1935, LA>MS

Edward "Ned" McCain, my paternal great-great grandfather, was born 19 July 1855 in Washington Parish, Louisiana, the son of James B. McCain and Mary "Polly" Hines.  He was enumerated with his parents on the 1860 Federal Census, Washington Parish, Louisiana (shows Edward, age 5, born in Louisiana).

Ned's father died c. 1863.  His widowed mother then married Seaborn W. Stogner, the son of Ezell and Martha Pigott Stogner.  On the 1870 census, Ned and his siblings are listed with their mother and stepfather, who then resided in Marion County, Mississippi.  The household consisted of Seaborn Stayner (Stogner, head), Mary (wife, Ned's mother), Martha (mother of Seaborn), and the McCain siblings: William, Edward, Samuel B and Nicholas.

Ned married first Margaret Ann Turnage c. 1877.  She was born 28 March 1856 in Marion County, Mississippi, the daughter of Robert Daniel "Bob" Turnage and Martha Ellen "Elin" Pigott.  In 1880, Edward (Ned) "McKane" and his wife Ann resided next door to his mother and stepfather.  The couple had a daughter, Susan C. (Cordelia), age 2.  Ned's brother, Nicholas, also resided with them.

Twenty years later, Ned and Ann remained in Marion County.  Their family had grown quite considerably.  The 1900 Federal Census shows that the couple had been married 22 years and were the parents of 9 children, of whom all were still living.  Their eldest daughter, Susan Cordelia McCain, had married Thomas Edward Stogner.  Another daughter, Phylonia Elen McCain (born in 1882), had married Joseph Edward Kennedy.  The seven children remaining resided with them- James, age 19, Monroe, age 15, Willie, age 13, Pearlie, age 12, Francis, age 9, Minnie, age 6 and Ned, age 4.

Ann died 10 July 1900, shortly after the 1900 Federal Census was taken.  She was buried in the Turnage Chapel Cemetery, Marion County, Mississippi.  

Ned married second Ophelia Magee c. 1904.  She was born 25 July 1862, the daughter of Ben Lensford Magee and Sophronia Ryals.  The couple were shown together on the 1910 Federal Census, which indicates they had been married 6 years.  Three of Ned's children from his marriage with Ann remained at home- son Willie, daughter Minnie and son Bossie (son "Ned" on the 1900 census).  His son, Monroe, had married Rosalie Stogner (daughter of John W. and Frances Stogner) and they resided next door.

A decade later, Ned and Ophelia had an empty nest, for all of Ned's children had moved out.  Remaining next door was Monroe and Rosa McCain, along with their daughter Francis.  By then, Walthall County had been created out of a portion of Marion County, thus explaining the county change on the census.

Ned's second wife, Ophelia, died on 26 November 1927.  She was buried in the Carson Springs Baptist Church cemetery, Walthall County, Mississippi.  In 1930, Ned resided with his daughter, Minnie, who had married Charles Daniel Turnage (son of Eli and Docia Turnage).

Edward "Ned" McCain died on 23 March 1935 in Walthall County, Mississippi.  He was buried next to his second wife, Ophelia, in Carson Springs Baptist Church cemetery.  Ned and Ophelia had no children together.

Stephen Peak, c.1780's-1824, Amite County>Marion County MS

My paternal 4th great-grandfather, Stephen Peak, was born c. 1780-1790.  He married Elizabeth Ann May, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth May, on 21 November 1911 in Amite County, Mississippi.  He was in Marion County, Mississippi in the early 1810's as he is listed as a witness on various land and property transactions and other court matters.  The Orphan's Court for Marion County was held in the home of Stephen Peak numerous times.  He was also granted a tavern license in Marion County.  

Stephen Peak enlisted as an Adjutant in the 13th Regiment of the Mississippi Militia under Nixon's command during the War of 1812.  His first muster date was 06 January 1815 and discharge date was 05 February 1815.  He was listed on the 1816 Mississippi State & Territorial Census in Marion County.  On the 1820 federal census of Marion County, Mississippi, Stephen Peak had the following in his household:  8 males under age 10, 1 male age 16-25, 1 male age 26-44, 1 female age 16-25, 1 female age 26-44, and 11 slaves.  

Stephen Peak died c. 1824.  His widow, Elizabeth Ann, later married Henry Henniger.

iii.   Elexander Peak, married Luecynde Smith- This is my line.  Thomas Peak, who married Elizabeth Boyte, was the son of Elexander Peak and Luecynde Smith.  There are probably more children, but they remain unknown at present.
