(Not So) Wordless Wednesday: Henry H. Johnson Family

Henry H. Johnson Family

In the photo above, Henry H. Johnson (front row, last on right) is shown with several of his children.  At present, I can not identify them individually in the photo.

Henry H. Johnson was the son of James Absalom Johnson Sr and Luvenia "Lucy" Brinkley.  He was born 18 October 1822 in Marion County, Mississippi.  He married first Eliza Ann Lott, the daughter of Joshua Samuel Lott and Georgia Roseann Barnes.  Their children were:  Amanda, Sarah Ann, Annie Eliza, Emily, Henry Alexander, Robert Henry and Absalom.

Eliza Ann, Henry's first wife, died in 1860 at the young age of 30 years.  Family historians report that she died shortly after childbirth.  She was laid to rest in the Lott Family Cemetery in New Hope, Marion County, Mississippi.

In 1866, Henry married Martha Ann Turnage, the daughter of William George and Milbry Turnage.  She was born 29 March 1852 in Pike County, Mississippi and died 06 August 1895 in Marion County.  Henry and Martha Ann had four children:  Julie Ann, Barbara Alice, William H. "Willie" and John B.

The 1900 federal census, Marion County, Mississippi, shows Henry Johnson, age 77, was living alone and widowed.  Henry died 15 February 1810 at the age of 87.  He is buried in the Lott Family Cemetery in New Hope, Mississippi.  It is reported that both wives are buried alongside him, but I have been unable to confirm this information.

(Not So) Wordless Wednesday: Historical Photo- John Albert & Emily Elizabeth Stogner Lowery

Emily Elizabeth Stogner was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Stogner and Elizabeth Stubbs. According to the records I have available, she was born November 1876 in Marion County, Mississippi and died 1962 in Walthall County, Mississippi. She married John Albert Lowery on December 16, 1896 in Marion County. The couple settled in Walthall County and had several children. They were married over 60 years when John Albert died in 1961. Both are buried in Oral Missionary Church Cemetery in Walthall County.

Emily Elizabeth Stogner was my great grand aunt. A copy of this photo, taken probably between 1950-60, was given to me by Bill Reagan. I was thrilled to get it, thanks Bill!

(Not So) Wordless Wednesday: Historical Photo- Turnage Family Gathering

There are several copies of this photo in circulation within the Turnage circles.  Family tradition states that the photo is that of the Robert Daniel Turnage family and they had gathered to honor his birthday.

Reportedly, Robert Daniel Turnage is the man sitting in the front row with the child sitting on the ground in front of him.  His brother is sitting next to him- the man with the long beard.  This was a huge gathering!  I counted at least 106 people in this photo, and I probably missed a few!  I wish that the people in this photo from the past could each be identified.

Robert Daniel Turnage was my paternal 3rd great grandfather.  He married Martha Ellen Pigott on 25 January 1848 in Marion County, Mississippi.  They had 8 children that I'm aware of.  Some sources say the couple had 14 children, but I have not investigated the family thoroughly as of yet.

If anyone can help identify some of these family members, please contact me.  I would love to know more!

(Not So) Wordless Wednesday: Historical Photo- Cutting Yellow Pine in Pine Burr

^

In the early part of this century, many yellow pines like this one were cut in the Pineburr community, which was located between Oloh and Baxterville.  Shown in the picture are, from left, Abb Johnson, Bob Johnson, Henry Johnson and Alex Johnson.  They worked for the Walworth and Neville Manufacturing Co. in Pineburr.  (Photo courtesy of C.D. Johnson)

Bob Johnson was my great-grandfather.  Abb and Henry Johnson were brothers of Bob Johnson (my great grand uncles).  They were the sons of Wilson "Babe" Johnson and Elizabeth G. "Betty" Fillingame.  Alex Johnson was their cousin.

Bob Johnson was the "Grandpaw Bob" my Mom often mentions in her memoirs. She clipped this newspaper article several years ago from a local paper.  I have no knowledge of the date the article was published.
